                          Poitou Donkey



Poitou Donkey (Baudet de Poitou), or mammoth donkey well, or "age-donkey" extremely friendly, gentle and obedient creature belongs to one of the oldest breeds in France.

Despite his advanced age, this breed is still obscure. It is believed that long-haired donkeys came to the territory of the province of Poitou in France since the Roman conquerors, who appreciate them long thick hair and high performance quality.

The result is a breed of Poitou, whose members today are the largest in size and the best workers among donkeys.

In the Middle Ages in the circles of the French nobility possession of Poitou donkey it was considered a symbol of high status and its excellent qualities have been known even at the royal court.

At the end of the last century, this rare breed was virtually forgotten - in 1977 around the world there are 44 Poitou donkey. However, the joint efforts of breeders breed managed to revive, bringing the number of mammoth donkeys up to 400 individuals, 180 of which - Thoroughbreds. Due to the successful breeding program, every year a few lucky ones are able to buy these amazing animals in private ownership.

The greatest pride of the Poitou donkey - shaggy dark brown or black hair, called «cadanette», which is in the form of long cords hanging down almost to the hooves.

It is not trimmed because Poitou fur softer and longer than that of other breeds. Animals with long hair are valued above all. Thoroughbred Poitou donkey must have a white belly and two white rings - around the eyes and nose.
